All fine jewelry requires proper care. While some jewelry may require select care, most jewelry should be cared for using the following basics:
Sunlight - Just as sunlight can damage skin, heat and light can damage certain gems. Too much sunlight can fade or damage amethyst and topaz. Pearls can bleach and flake if exposed to too much sunlight. Certain other gemstones, such as opals, can darken if exposed to too much light. To remove any doubt, store jewelry in a dark-colored bag or jewelry box.
Chemicals - Exposure to common everyday household chemicals such as ammonia or bleach can damage metals and gemstones. Even chemicals applied to the body—like hairspray, perfume, and lotion—can affect metals and dull gemstones. To keep your jewelry looking new, it's a good idea to apply any perfume, lotion, or hairspray before wearing your jewelry. It's always wise to remove fine jewelry before swimming or using any type of household cleaner.
Treated gemstones - Many gemstones today are treated and these gemstones require special care. All treatments should be disclosed at the time of purchase. Treated gemstones may be negatively affected by heat, steam or ultrasonic cleaners and certain solvents. Follow your jeweler's directions to make your treated gemstone jewelry look sparkling.

Jewelry Ultrasonic Cleaners - While ultrasonic cleaners are great for cleaning metals, diamonds, and certain gemstones, they should not be used in the following situations:
On organic gems like pearls, coral or ivory.
Any gemstone whose cracks are filled with oil, resin or glass. For example, most emeralds are crack filled and should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Coated gemstone. For example, Mystic Fire Topaz has finished nitrogen coating and should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Certain heat-treated gems.
Any gemstones that are susceptible to heat or temperature changes, such as tanzanite, cordierite, opal, etc., should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.
